Anais Mitchell

  • Anais Mitchell

Hailing from rural Vermont, Anais Mitchell began writing songs at the age of seventeen and released her first album, which was recorded in a single afternoon, in 2002. After her follow-up album 'Hymns for the Exiled' reached the ears of Ani diFranco, it wasn't long before diFranco had signed her up to her own label, Righteous Babe Records.

Her third record, 'The Brightness', was released in early 2007, drawing praise and comparisons to some of the great folk songwriters of recent times. Nominated the following year as Contemporary Artist at the Folk Alliance Awards, Mitchell went on to tour with Bon Iver and Ani diFranco, playing her stirring and intense songs across the US and Europe.

In 2010 her folk opera 'Hadestown' was released, featuring performances by Ani diFranco, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Greg Brown and Ben Knox Miller (The Low Anthem).

Press

"Fearlessly emotive...like Dylan, Cohen and Welch, Mitchell weaves her stories into an effortlessly beautiful and cohesive tapestry with the skill of an artisan's carpenter, showing no seams."
Acoustic Guitar

"In Mitchell's universe, there is no light between the personal and the political, the venerable and the radical....she brilliantly intertwines the mundane and the profound, signing with the same intimacy about a carefree night on the town and wandering the warring towns of Israel."
The Boston Globe
